Camilo De La Hoz, one of our HQPs from van der Baan’s Group, is one of the champions of the Challenge Bowl, hosted by the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG) Foundation at this year’s Geo-Convention (Jun 17-19, 2024). He partnered with Gracie Avery in the competition, in which they formed the Team while watching the Oilers game. Shared by Camilo, they received the least points in former rounds, but turned the tables in the last round, where they got most of the points.

Camilo is currently a PhD Student in the Geophysics Graduate Program at the University of Alberta. His research centers on signal processing and seismic studies.
Camilo said, “I decided to participate just for fun, that was my first time participating in an activity like that. It turned out to be a delightful surprise, especially with the chance to make new friends. On the other hand, the award could have been a nice opportunity to attend the IMAGE conference and visit Houston.”
“I also think that supporting activities for spreading science while having fun was the main takeaway. I believe that participating and getting engaged in all side activities during conferences make the experience more enjoyable.”
With reference to the CSEG Foundation, the Challenge Bowl is an action-packed geoscience quiz game for geological and geophysical CSEG student members. This intense competition is a fast paced Jeopardy-style game where contestants attempt to buzz in with answers to challenging science questions.
The recipients of this award will travel to Houston, United States, between August 26-29, 2024, for the Global Challenge Bowl, which will take place during the International Meeting for Applied Geoscience & Energy (IMAGE 2024). Let us congratulate Camilo and wish them all the best!
