As part of MIC’s ongoing research program, the University of Calgary partnered with sponsors ARC Resources and OptaSense, and wireline and conveyance service providers ESG Solutions and Altus Intervention, to acquire a wireline (dip-in) distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) monitoring dataset in northeastern BC in January 2021. The dataset was acquired to monitor a multi-well completion program in the Montney play to support research on low-frequency interwellbore strain, development of a comprehensive workflow for DAS microseismic processing and evaluating the effectiveness of dip-in DAS observations compared with permanent fibres. Real-time monitoring showed clear frac hits for 54 stages, at offset distances of more than 300m. The results of this experiment support the effectiveness of dip-in DAS acquisition and represents an exceptional example of academic-industry research synergy. Initial results from processing and interpretation of this dataset will be presented to MIC sponsors at the 2021 Annual Sponsors Meeting.
